Alumni Who Make a Difference:

Many of our alumni have done things to make a difference to the lives of other people, and we always want to hear more about our alumni.

We posted these stories some time ago on our social media pages.  Back then we had very few followers, however, we thought it worthwhile compiling these posts in this feature.

Making Fishermen

Marc Rosa (MS ’11) subscribes to the wisdom in the Chinese proverb; Give a Man a Fish, and You Feed Him for a Day. Teach a Man To Fish, and You Feed Him for a Lifetime.

Along with his wife, Marc started a charity to reduce poverty by assisting individuals around the world who want to create educational or entrepreneurial opportunities for themselves.  http://www.kutamani.org/

Mark recently commenced MBA studies at Harvard Business School.

We wish Mark the best with his studies and his charity.

Helping the Helpers

British alumnus Simon Maher is an Assistant Professor at the University of Liverpool, and was part of the inaugural class at KAUST. Since graduating, he has co-founded an award winning charity for young people who are the only caregiver for someone who is ill or an elderly family member. As Simon said, “Most of these unsung heroes work 24/7 and 365, and they need support.”

Build the World

Jacky KC Ng (MS ’11) is a member of the Hong Kong

Institution of Engineers who regularly help others. Jacky

traveled to Armenia, where the team applied their expertise

to renovate and repair of a house for a low-income family.

The economic and social transitions, a devastating

earthquake in 1988, and large influxes of refugees have

created a desperate housing situation in Armenia.

First Aid - Maybe Not for the First Time

As an undergraduate student in Lebanon, Gerald Matar (PhD ’15) spent three years as a volunteer for the Lebanese Red Cross (LRC) First Aid Department. The LRC provides disaster and humanitarian relief, such as medical care in conflict zones, rescuing refugees, evacuations, and more.  Gerald said, ‘’It was an outstanding and unique experience that I will definitely repeat whenever I have the chance in the future.’’
